In 2009, BMW unveiled a concept car called the "BMW Vision Efficient Dynamics" at the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt, which was intended to serve as a technology showcase for future BMW developments: The 2+2-seater sports car featured gullwing doors, a plug-in hybrid system, and all-wheel drive. At the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA), BMW presented the successor concept car to this vehicle, the "BMW i8," and shortly thereafter (IAA 2013) the production model was unveiled. The i8 was part of the newly founded "BMW i" sub-brand and, according to research, over 20,500 units were produced until 2020.
